Three disciplines
From the Wai Khru to the final bell.
The Pilatus Fightnight features three of the world's most popular stand-up disciplines. Here you'll find what defines them, how they work – and what to watch for as a spectator.
The art of eight limbs
Muay Thai
Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport and is considered the most complete stand-up discipline. Punches, elbows, knees and shins are allowed – plus the Clinch.
Rules at a glance
- Five rounds of three minutes (pro) or three rounds (amateur).
- Judges score effectiveness, damage, aggression and ring control.
- Clinch and sweeps are allowed, but no throws.
- Knockdown and 10-point scoring system, as in boxing.
What to watch for
Watch for the Wai Khru Ram Muay before the fight – a traditional dance with which the athletes honour their trainers and ancestors. It is mandatory and unique in the world of combat sports.
Fast, hard, spectacular
K1
K1 is the world's most popular kickboxing style. Born in Japan in the 1990s, it combines the most spectacular techniques from karate, boxing, Muay Thai and taekwondo.
Rules at a glance
- Three rounds of three minutes, with short breaks.
- Allowed: punches and kicks above the beltline as well as knees to the body.
- No long Clinch, no elbows – this keeps the pace high.
- Consistent activity scoring: whoever dominates and lands strikes wins.
What to watch for
K1 fights thrive on pace and power. Expect non-stop action, spectacular high kicks and short, intense rounds.
The sweet science for over 100 years
Boxing
Boxing is the oldest and purest stand-up discipline: only punches, only above the beltline. What sounds simple is, at the highest level, a game of chess on legs.
Rules at a glance
- Pro fights over up to 12 rounds of three minutes, amateur fights usually three rounds.
- Only punches above the beltline are allowed.
- 10-point scoring system with three neutral judges.
- Knockdown rule: three knockdowns in a round can end the fight.
What to watch for
Watch the footwork and distance management. Whoever controls the distance controls the fight – no matter how hard the other one hits.
